The day begins before sunrise with sargi — a tray of sweets, fruits, and nourishing foods prepared by the mother-in-law and eaten before the fast begins. As evening approaches, women dress in their finest clothes and jewelry, adorn their hands with mehndi, and gather to perform the Karwa Chauth puja — listening to the sacred katha, the story behind the fast, and offering prayers to the Goddess. When the moon rises, women view it through a sieve, then look at their husband's face through the same sieve before accepting water from his hands to break the fast.
